Travelling Circles (2005)
for String Quintet and Tape This was the first piece in which I used graphic notation in addition to traditional notation. I have worked as a graphic designer and an animator and have always had a strange interest in how music looks and why it looks the way it does. One area that I want to explore is what I like to call video scores, motion scores that interact with the performance, taking the audience on a visual journey that is purely musical in its conception. Program Note Travelling Circles are paths that lead back to where they started. Circles is a girl who travels a lot. Travelling in Circles is what I do when I write music. Travelling Circles are elements of visual notation loosely expressing intensity and density over a given period of time. Travelling Circles is a bad word play on the term Travelling Circus. Travelling in Circles best describes what people do in large meetings focused on making money. The Travelling Circles was a late 90s ska/punk band whose one single Milk received limited airplay for about three weeks in 1999 before the band broke up over a stationary square. Traveling Circles refer to commonly travelled routes in the ex-pat communities of Southeast Asia. Travelling Circles is a somewhat intense piece of string music that never quite made it big. Travelling Circles is what the laser is doing that is performing the tape part of this piece. Travelling Circles is a title intended to allow the mind to wander. Travelling Circles is dedicated to the J2C2S Quintet. Thanks.
